Falling off a cliff Edge? Care leavers’ experience of their transition from CAMHS
Participant Information Sheet (1.12.19)
Background
Colleen Pattison, a Master’s degree student in Social Work Practice at the University of York and mental health social worker at North Tyneside Council, would like to invite you to take part in the above research project. The research is being undertaken by Colleen as part of her Master’s degree, under the supervision of Dr Nicola Moran, Lecturer in the Department for Social Policy and Social Work at the University of York. It is not being undertaken for, or on behalf of, North Tyneside Council. The research is not funded.
Before deciding whether or not to take part, please read this information sheet carefully and let me know if anything is unclear or you would like further information.
What is this research about?
The overall aim of the research project is to investigate the experiences of young care leavers when they had to leave Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) because they had reached age 18 and went to; adult mental health services, third sector services, or no service at all. Within this there are a number of objectives, which are:
- To identify how mental health organisations can improve the process for those leaving CAMHS by highlighting the positive and negative experiences of a sample of young care leavers who have had to do this.
-To identify the different ways that young care leavers are supported, or not, when having to leave CAMHS.
-To explore what happens to those care leavers who do and who do not meet the threshold for Adult Mental Health Services.
-To identify possible gaps in mental health services for care leavers.
Who is eligible to take part?
This study is open to young care leavers in England, currently aged 18-25, who accessed CAMHS up until the age of 18.
What does taking part involve?
Taking part in this research would involve completing a short online survey. Before completing the survey you would be asked to read and agree to a number of statements explaining what will happen to your data.
You will be asked questions with mainly yes or no answers or to tick a box next to your chosen answer out of a list. It is possible that you may become upset during the survey as I am aware your experiences may not have been positive and may trigger bad memories of experiences you have had. If this does occur there are a number of support services you can access, please click on the link for details.
Mental health services
You will be asked at the end of the survey if you would like to volunteer to take part in a telephone discussion where your answers to the survey will be explored in more detail. If you would like to volunteer you will be asked to leave your email address. You can take part in the survey even if you do not want to take part in a follow-up discussion. Your anonymous survey responses will be uploaded and saved to a secure encrypted file server at the University of York, then analysed, with the anonymised results written up into a journal article.
All those who complete the survey can choose to enter into a prize draw, the prize being an Amazon gift voucher for the sum of £20. To enter you would need to enter your email address, however this will be separated from your survey responses so that they remain anonymous. A winner will be picked at random. Email addresses will be saved on the University of York secure fileserver and deleted once the prize draw has been won.
Do I have to take part?
No, participation is voluntary. Whether or not you take part will have no impact on any services you receive now or in the future. You can exit the survey at any point before submission simply by closing it down, however, once you have submitted your responses they cannot be withdrawn as your anonymous data will not be able to be identified.
What will happen to my data?
Your survey responses will be anonymous, thus you will not be identified in any research outputs. All data will be kept on the University of York’s secure file server. Anonymised survey responses will be stored on the University’s secure file server for 10 years and shared with other researchers undertaking research on this topic. For expanded information on the study’s full GDPR compliance, please refer to the data management leaflet by clicking on the link.

Will confidentiality ever be broken?
Your survey data will be anonymous (unless you provide an email address for a follow-up interview). Data will be kept strictly confidential unless you write something which suggests that you or somebody else is at risk of harm and then I may need to tell somebody else about this.
Who has given approval to conduct the research?
The study has received ethical approval from the Departmental Ethics Committee of the Department of Social Policy and Social Work at the University of York (Ref: SPSW/MTA/2019/8).
