- Background
The University of York, project supervisor: Paul Bishop would like to invite you to take part in the following research project.
Before agreeing to take part, please read this information sheet carefully and let us know if anything is unclear or you would like further information.
If you have any questions or want to discuss any aspect of the study please contact Paul Bishop (paul.bishop@york.ac.uk) before completing the consent form. |
- What is the purpose of the study?
The study is designed to investigate whether descriptions given of defendants impact decision-making.
You will be asked to take the role of a mock juror. You will be presented with a scenario and asked to evaluate the evidence and ultimately give their verdict of whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty.
Each scenario includes a block of text describing the defendant and the crime committed. You will then be asked to read through the case facts presented by both the prosecution and the defense and weigh the evidence to decide whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty of the crime and how confident you are in this decision (high vs low)
After completing this, you will be asked to provide demographic information (age, gender and religious affiliation), and then completely debriefed.
This study includes case descriptions of a fictional crime committed and deciding how guilty the defendant is. If you think these materials might negatively affect you, please do not take part in this study. You are also free to stop the study at any time before completion without providing a reason.
The study will take about 15-20 minutes to complete |
- Why have I been invited to take part?
