Research Purpose: My research will involve how parenting styles of single fathers and how these techniques shape the way adolescents behave, to see if any specific style of a single father upbringing, and the associations between being brought up by a single father and risk of delinquent behaviour during adolescence. As the child of a single father, you are being asked to take part in the study, and to give an insight into your upbringing and your experiences on the following topics: Educational and academic achievement, social life and emotional attachment. This study is being conducted at the University of York’s Sociology Department.
Research Procedures: Should you take part in the study, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire, which will be split into 4 parts. The first section is split into 3 parts, asking you general questions about: your educational life, your social life, and emotional attachments. The second part is a questionnaire based around adolescent delinquency. The questions are simple to answer, as you are not asked to go into detail in any of your answers, with the questions you do answer are answered truthfully, in relation to your experiences. As you will be answering questions which could indicate you have committed a crime, you may have reservations about answering truthfully, however all answers recorded are in strict confidentiality, so no details that is gathered from the research can result in a criminal charge.
It is in my best interest to make sure you are comfortable in engaging in my study, so it is my duty to make you aware that some questions may be difficult to answer, for various reasons, including emotional distress. That is why it is not an obligation for you to answer some, if any, of the questions in this study. Should you not wish to answer certain questions, or take part in the study, you are not obliged to and may withdraw yourself at any time during the study. Although once you are engaging with the study, I do ask once again that you answer all questions truthfully, to get the most out of your results.
Should you wish to withdraw yourself from the study, on the email sent out to your father’s email, there is an ‘opt-out’ option, which is available if you answer 'no' to any of the questions on the consent form. If you wish to opt-out of this study, your data will be destroyed and not included at any point in the findings of the research. If, at any point, you are struggling with this, it is best to get in contact through email (any emails MUST be sent through your fathers email) and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
This questionnaire should take around 20 minutes to complete.
