Information for participants

You are being invited to take part in a research project. Before you decide whether to participate, it is important that you understand why the research is being performed and what it will involve. Please take the time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Ask us if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.

Study set-up

The experiment involves accent recognition. It should take no more than 30 minutes to complete—likely a good deal less. You will hear brief samples of British English. Your task is to listen to each in turn and say whether it is spoken in a Yorkshire accent.

Participation

It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part in this study, and you can stop at any time.

Benefits and disadvantages

Whilst there are no immediate benefits for those people participating in the project, it is hoped that this work will contribute to knowledge of accent discrimination, with the ultimate aim of improving the accuracy and fairness of language analysis in the asylum procedure. There are no foreseeable disadvantages of taking part in this study.

Confidentiality

All the information collected about you in the course of the research will be kept strictly confidential. You will not be identified in any reports or publications and no names will be collected. The data you provide will be used alongside the data of other participants to assess people's ability to recognise accents. Your data will be stored securely in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York.

Your data

Your identity will be kept strictly confidential. No real names will be used in any presentations or publications or in my thesis.
